When was the moment you fell in love with Mass Spectrometry?

I started research as an undergraduate student in a synthesis laboratory; I found myself much more interested in the analysis than the synthesis. I joined a mass spectrometry group for graduate school and it was love at first spectrum! As I’ve learned all of the experiments and applications of mass spectrometry, the enjoyment in the field has only deepened.

What is the best thing that could happen to the field of Mass Spectrometry in 5 years?

I hope to see greater integration of orthogonal techniques into commercial platforms. I would really love to see wavelength-tunable infrared multiple photon dissociation more widely accessible!

What has been the proudest moment in your life science career?

When I started at university, I only knew I wanted an undergraduate degree in chemistry. Every major achievement (fellowships, publications, job opportunities, student/advisee successes) since then has just been an unexpected, but hard-earned and much appreciated joy!
