Frederick Lermyte
Assist. Prof & Group Leader Conformation - Sensitive Mass Spectrometry Lab, Technische Universitat Darmstadt
When was the moment you fell in love with Mass Spectrometry?
The first time I measured a native mass spectrum of a large protein complex during my PhD. The idea that we're routinely studying such fragile, complex, and essential molecular machines with MS, is still just as exciting to me today!
What is the best thing that could happen to the field of Mass Spectrometry in 5 years?
We've recently seen the first steps toward combining native protein MS with subunit fragmentation for sequencing. This powerful approach will hopefully become more widely adopted, and extended to simultaneously probing all levels of protein structure.
What has been the proudest moment in your life science career?
Successfully proposing and subsequently leading a multinational initiative to push the capabilities of native MS. This project is currently ongoing, so hopefully the results will become publicly available in 2021!
