When was the moment you fell in love with Mass Spectrometry?
Mass spec captured my interest in my undergraduate studies, but I fell in love with the field in graduate school as I learned how ion traps work and all they can do. I still find myself awestruck from time to time with how amazing our modern instruments are. Sometimes I just watch the instrument acquire data and get excited with how many things are happening to collect each spectrum
What is the best thing that could happen to the field of Mass Spectrometry in 5 years?
I am excited to watch continued improvements in harmonizing multi-omic datasets. We have made great strides in how to collect impressive datasets for many classes of biomolecules, and I look forward to gains in extracting biological insight from the overlay of different data types. Beyond that, we need diverse perspectives to grow and advance our science. I hope we can say we made substantive improvements in our inclusion of all types of mass spectrometrists 5 years from now.
What has been the proudest moment in your life science career?
It is hard to top the moments where I can help teach someone about mass spectrometry. I have benefited and learned a lot from excellent teachers/mentors along the way, so it is a great feeling to continue that legacy.
